Managed VPS Canada: what should management include?

“Managed VPS” is not a standardized package. Before comparing managed VPS services in Canada, write down which operational tasks you expect the provider to perform and which remain your responsibility.

Define the layer being managed

Operating-system management may include patching and core services without touching WordPress, application code, database queries, or third-party integrations. Application management is a broader service and should be stated explicitly.

Ask what monitoring leads to an action

Monitoring can mean a dashboard only, alerting the customer, or provider staff responding to a defined condition. Ask who receives alerts and what the provider is authorized to do when a service fails.

Clarify backup and restore responsibility

“Backups included” should describe what is copied, frequency, retention, location, restore process, and whether restore testing is part of the service. A managed server without a tested recovery process still has recovery risk.

Understand support boundaries before the outage

Document what happens when the issue is inside custom code, a third-party API, database design, DNS at another provider, or an unsupported package. Management is useful when the handoff between provider and customer is unambiguous.
